New Additions to MSFS 2024: C-17, Edgley Optica & More

With the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 just weeks away, more details continue to emerge about what’s in store for this major update in flight simulation.

Last week, FlightFX shared their work in partnership with Microsoft, introducing new aircraft and technologies to the sim. This week, the spotlight turned to Got Friends, Miltech Simulations, and Hype Performance Group, whose contributions include everything from rugged bush planes to helicopters and large military cargo aircraft.

Got Friends

Got Friends kicked off the stream, showcasing a range of unique aircraft that will provide simmers with varied flight experiences in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

Edgley Optica

The iconic Edgley Optica returns, redesigned with enhanced detail and accuracy. Known for its panoramic views, this aircraft is often likened to a helicopter due to its 270-degree bubble cockpit view.

Highlighted Features:

  • Observation Capabilities: Equipped with advanced cameras with multiple modes (EO wide, IR hot/cold, adjustable contrast), ideal for low-speed surveillance and VR experiences.
  • Flight Range: Capable of 8-hour flights in loiter mode, cruising between 45-110 knots but optimized for 45-70 knots.
  • Cockpit and Avionics: Includes a KAP 140 autopilot, Garmin 530, and a standard GA nine-pack. Weight adjustments are required based on passenger count to maintain balance.
  • Visual Enhancements: Improved night lighting and cockpit illumination, though the popular dog and cat mascots from MSFS 2020 are no longer included.

Stemme S12G

Next, Got Friends highlighted the Stemme S12G, a motor glider designed for extensive tours.

Key Specifications:

  • Design: With a 25-meter wingspan and a retractable propeller, this glider uses a Rotax 914 turbo engine for self-powered takeoff.
  • Power Systems: Solar panels dynamically charge avionics based on sun position.
  • Avionics: Features dual Garmin G3X and LX9000 navigation, with customizable settings.
  • Wing Flex: Realistic wing flex adds to the aerodynamic authenticity.
Pipistrel Taurus M

The Pipistrel Taurus M is a smaller motor glider with a 15-meter wingspan.

Notable Features:

  • Engine and Power: Powered by a Rotax 503, it allows for self-launching or towing.
  • Energy Management: Solar panels power avionics, while separate batteries fuel the engine.
  • Ground Handling: The lightweight frame and long wings require extra attention in windy conditions.

Draco X

Inspired by Mike Patey’s creation, Draco X is another highlight, built for rugged terrain and STOL competitions.

Key Features:

  • Performance: Equipped with a 1,000-horsepower turboprop engine and five-bladed propeller.
  • Realism: Features advanced suspension and oxygen monitoring for high-altitude flights.
  • Customization: Unique dirt and mud simulation based on terrain.
  • Mission Compatibility: Supports missions like cargo, passenger transport, and search and rescue.
Savage Norden

The Savage Norden is a robust bush plane suited for challenging terrain.

Highlights:

  • Design: Includes double-slotted flaps, heavy-duty suspension, and precise handling for short-field landings.
  • Customization: A notepad in the cockpit allows configuration options, including cabin setups.
  • Avionics: Equipped with Garmin G3X touch for navigation.

Miltech Simulations C-17 Globemaster III

Miltech Simulations presented their highly detailed Boeing C-17 Globemaster III for MSFS 2024.

Overview:

  • Payload Capacity: Can carry up to 170,000 pounds and take off from short, rough runways, making it ideal for military and cargo operations.
  • Cargo Management: Features a dynamic center-of-gravity system and loadmaster station for handling various cargo.
  • Interior Detailing: Includes areas like the rest area, galley, and lavatory for immersion.
  • Systems: Equipped with multiple MFDs and a custom fly-by-wire system.
  • Lighting: Accurate cargo bay lighting and night-vision compatibility for realistic nighttime missions.
Hype Performance Group Airbus H225

Hype Performance Group introduced their Airbus H225 helicopter, designed to enhance rotary-wing operations in MSFS 2024.

Key Features:

  • Real-World Data: Built in partnership with Airbus, featuring 3D scans and real audio recordings.
  • Variants: Both civilian and search-and-rescue models with mission-specific equipment like operational hoists.
  • Avionics: Features four MFDs and a CMA 900 flight management system, complete with IFR support.
  • Visuals: Improved textures and lighting with realistic weather effects, including rain and wiper tracks.

These new additions give a deeper glimpse into the impressive aircraft lineup arriving in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Microsoft has partnered with top developers to create a lineup catering to every type of pilot. MSFS 2024 is set for release on November 19th.
